Location, location: UK Hot Property

Buying property is all about location, location, location. A great location should get you a great return on your property. But how do you know if you are buying in a prime location? Propertyfinder.com has taken the guesswork out of choosing the hottest property spots by revealing the top searches on its site. But we also want your feedback. Brag about where you live – or tell us where you aspire to live… We want you to tell us where you think the best locations are.

February saw counties in the southwest trounce the rest of the country as the most popular places to look for property.

• Cornwall, Dorset, Devon and Somerset topped the national chart of favourites and Surrey came in at number 5.

• No counties north of Lincolnshire made it into the top 10.

• Cornwall proved to be twice as popular as Surrey and all the southwestern counties were far ahead of their rivals in the southeast. Towns to take out the top rankings:

• Lincoln, Oxford and Southampton

• Exeter was the fifth most popular town in the country

• Bristol, Bournemouth and Plymouth made it into the top 20.

Propertyfinder.com. director Nicholas Leeming says the popularity of the south-west was a mixed blessing for locals. “Everyone knows how beautiful the south west is,” he said. “Many of those searching the region for property are outsiders looking for second homes. That can push the price of property beyond the means of locals who have relatively lower incomes. It’s no surprise that younger people tend to move away looking for better paid work.”

January saw Brighton take the crown of the most popular location, followed by Manchester then Watford. London topped the list for overall activity (adjusted for the number of households); but activity in the capital was no better than average when compared to the rest of the country.

Propertyfinder.com’s commercial director Neil Tavender says, although the national market has cooled, some areas were still hives of activity.

“Buyer activity on propertyfinder.com in Brighton is almost four times the average for the country,” he said. “Our overall traffic data at a national level, and the increase in leads we are delivering to estate agents, reflect not so much a resurgence in the housing market, but more our growing success in reaching the home movers that agents need us to help find for them.”

So, do you think your town or area is the best. Tell us where you live and why you think it’s one of the UK’s prime locations.
