I'm trying to grow grass where the trees stood

Rosemary says:
I have recently moved house and would love to give the grass a chance to take over from the weeds in the 'lawn'.

R Turley says:
I've had some big (dead) trees removed and the roots of the trees ground out. I'm now trying to grow a lawn where the trees stood. I've used growmore fertilizer, seeded the area three times but still have only sparse growth. What should I do now?

Anon:
We have two Springer spaniels who love to play consequently. Our lawn looks like a bit of waste ground dotted with holes where the younger of the two dogs has had a little dig when nobody was watching him.
