It's Barbecue Time!

With the first signs of spring here there's probably one thing that will inevitably top most of our 'to do lists', and that's to have a barbecue!

Quite simply, BBQs mark the start of finer weather but how do you make sure yours goes with a sizzle?

Preparation is essential for the perfect BBQ, so before you even start thinking about the food make sure you've got the right set-up.  Buying a gas BBQ over a charcoal variety may be more of an outlay to start with, but over time you'll see that it's cheaper to run. Moving on from the cost implications, gas models tend to be hassle-free, easier to control and come with a whole host of mod cons - handy warming racks, side burners, radiants and griddles. One advantage the charcoal barbecue has is their suitability for those with less space, not to mention how portable they are for picnics and camping!

Or if you have a spare £20,000 perhaps the Beefeater Ivis Outdoor Kitchen Centre is the one for you!

'Eco-Barbecuing'
If you have a charcoal barbecue, chances are the coals were sourced from tropical forests - quite a high price for alfresco dining. So for more eco-friendly barbecuing, look for locally sourced charcoal or try the eco-charcoal found in most supermarkets. To check whether you're buying sustainable charcoal, read the packaging and look for labels from the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes (PEFC).

Staying Safe

  • Ensure you clean all surfaces and utensils thoroughly before, during and after us to avoid food poisoning.

  • Thaw frozen meat and poultry thoroughly in a fridge and ensure you cook them until the juices run clear when pierced with a sharp knife.

  • Never use petrol or lighter fuel - only use non toxic firelighters.

And finally, make sure you have a good time!
