Q&A: Will PVC windows impact the value of my property?

double%20glazing.jpgI've moved into drafty Victorian house and want to fit double glazing. Will PVC windows impact on the value of my property?

Mattew Fine from Bairstow Eves in Marlebone suggests:

PVC windows should not affect the value of your home. They have come on a long way since the Seventies and the new double glazed sash cord windows look great. With the advent of Energy Certificates being issued on all properties being sold from next year and the energy savings from PVC, double glazing and secondary glazing windows I can only surmise that this will only affect the value of your property in one way, upwards.

How irresponsible! Replacement windows are one of THE things that affect property prices.

Done badly, casement style as your photo shows has changed the entire character of this property.

AND this is NOT material specific, we've seen horrible examples of aliminium, PVC and YES even timber....you see its ALL about design.

Lost hope then dont, your article IS right. Energy efficient sash windows (Proven to save 74% of the heat that is lost through a single glazed timber window, LOOK for the swing tag logo) are available, sash windows that have been security tested, and which the Police approve as Secured by Design are available, even green, eco friendly, "unleaded" with calcium organic as an excellent substitute.......AND all in PVCu that'll avoid high maintenance, retains the character of the property AND yes the investment in bricks and mortar, it's value.

Sorry I try really hard NOT to sound commercial. It's just we are passionate about sash windows, its all we make, and when the ODPM say bygone sash windows are virtually indistinguishable from the timber we know we are doing something right

Bronwyn, why not check us out, it'll cost nothing, just a little time, and your readres will appreciate your new found knowledge

i think PVC windows and doors are really green and save energy.

I think the best thing to do in this case is have a look at what other houses have done in your area. If it is a character property, then the character needs to be kept really! Although it also depends the person purchasing the house how much time they are prepared to spend maintaining the property.
